Meta has launched a new funding initiative, the Llama Impact Grant, aimed at supporting startups and researchers across Sub-Saharan Africa. In partnership with Data Science Africa, this program seeks to fuel innovation by helping local talents build AI-powered solutions using Meta’s open-source large language model, Llama.

The grant is part of Meta’s global push to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence in tackling the region’s most pressing challenges—ranging from healthcare and agriculture to education and scientific research.

Fueling AI Innovations with Llama in Africa

Artificial Intelligence continues to reshape industries, supercharging productivity and creativity while opening doors for groundbreaking advancements. Recognizing this, Meta is calling on African innovators, tech entrepreneurs, and researchers to pitch projects that creatively leverage Llama’s powerful AI capabilities.

This initiative is designed to spark homegrown AI-driven solutions tailored to Africa’s unique social and economic needs. The winning project will receive a $20,000 grant to turn their idea into reality.

Evaluation Criteria: What Meta is Looking For

According to Meta, each proposal will undergo a detailed review based on these key criteria:

  • A clear, compelling use case showcasing Llama’s potential
  • A well-mapped path to large-scale impact
  • Strong team expertise and diverse skillsets
  • Ethical approach in building and deploying the solution
  • A practical budget with realistic timelines

Applications are open until April 18, 2025. Interested individuals and organizations can apply through Meta’s online portal.

Why AI, Why Now?

Balkissa Ide Siddo, Meta’s Public Policy Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted the transformative role of AI, especially for emerging markets like Africa.

AI is still in its early days, but its impact is already massive. It’s driving innovation, accelerating growth, and unlocking new learning opportunities. Open-source models like Llama lower the barriers, allowing local innovators to create solutions that directly address Africa’s unique challenges, she noted.

Siddo further emphasized that the grant aims to empower African innovators to scale impactful solutions while contributing to the global AI ecosystem.

Llama’s Growing Impact in Real-World Solutions

Meta’s Llama AI models, including the latest Llama 3.3, have surpassed 1 billion downloads worldwide—a testament to their growing relevance. As open-source tools, they provide startups and organizations the flexibility to customize models without the hefty price tag associated with commercial AI products.

Llama has already played a pivotal role in several initiatives, including:

  • Localizing educational content for better access in underserved regions
  • Enhancing medical information accessibility in remote communities
  • Driving AI-based solutions in agriculture and healthcare

Success Stories: Previous Llama Grant Finalists Driving Change

Since launching the Llama Impact Grants globally in October 2023, the program has attracted over 800 applications from 90+ countries. Among standout African-focused finalists:

Digital Green’s Farmer Chat: A multilingual AI chatbot offering tailored agricultural advice to smallholder farmers. By fine-tuning Llama on local agricultural data, the chatbot supports farmers in languages like Hindi, Swahili, and Kikuyu—bridging the knowledge gap in rural farming communities.

Jacaranda Health’s PROMPTS: An AI-driven digital health platform designed to assist mothers in Kenya, Ghana, and Eswatini. PROMPTS combines SMS nudges with an AI-powered clinical helpdesk, ensuring timely maternal and newborn healthcare support across these countries.

These success stories demonstrate Llama’s potential in delivering meaningful impact—making technology work for those who need it most.
