MTN Group, one of Africa’s largest telecom giants, has disclosed a data breach involving the personal information of some of its customers.
The Johannesburg-based company, which serves around 288 million users across 18 African countries, announced the incident in a public statement. According to MTN, unauthorized parties gained access to certain customer data, but the company reassured stakeholders that its core network, billing, and financial systems were not impacted.
In the notice, MTN explained that an unknown third party had infiltrated parts of its systems. However, they found no evidence suggesting that customer accounts or digital wallets were directly compromised.
As soon as the breach was discovered, MTN quickly activated its cyber response plan and notified authorities in South Africa and other affected regions. The company stressed that it is working closely with regulators and is currently in the process of informing impacted customers as required by law.
While MTN has not confirmed exactly how many customers were affected, it urged all users to stay alert and practice strong security habits. The telecom group emphasized that protecting customer privacy remains a top priority and promised ongoing efforts to manage and contain the situation.
MTN assured its customers that it is committed to maintaining the security of its systems and safeguarding the trust placed in the brand. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
