Adams Street Partners has launched a €270 million European Venture Fund to power the next generation of startups in technology and healthcare. The new fund, which closed oversubscribed, shows strong investor interest in Europe’s startup ecosystem. Though this is the firm’s first dedicated European venture fund, Adams Street has already backed more than 70 European VC firms since 2000, including Accel, Balderton, and Index Ventures.
The fund will target 10 to 20 top-tier VC managers across the continent. Up to 30% of the capital will go into secondary deals and direct co-investments. Adams Street aims to build a diverse portfolio of around 400 early-stage startups in the next three years. Sectors in focus include enterprise software, mobile technology, digital health, security, and fintech.
A New Chapter for Adams Street’s European Strategy
This milestone builds on the firm’s strong history in private markets. Adams Street has been investing in venture capital for over 25 years. In fact, last year it closed its $1.2 billion Venture Innovation Fund IV, also oversubscribed. With this new European vehicle, the firm is deepening its presence in the region’s fast-growing startup landscape.
British Business Investments, a commercial arm of the UK government’s British Business Bank, committed up to €60 million to the fund. Their involvement boosts access to patient capital for high-growth startups across the UK and Europe. It also reinforces Adams Street’s ability to channel institutional money into long-term innovation.
Founded in 1972 in Chicago, Adams Street began as a growth equity arm of First National Bank. It later became an independent, employee-owned firm with a focus on private markets. Today, the firm manages more than $62 billion and operates in 30 countries with 13 global offices.
Why Adams Street’s Model Stands Out
The firm is known for its selectivity. Less than 2% of the funds it reviews receive capital. It combines primary fund commitments with secondaries and co-investments, giving clients both stability and upside potential. This hybrid model appeals to investors seeking access to high-growth startups without high risk.
Adams Street prefers minority stakes in founder-led companies solving big problems. While many of its portfolio names remain under wraps, the firm is widely recognized for backing unicorns and market leaders through strong VC relationships.
According to Partner Brijesh Jeevarathnam, the firm’s edge lies in its global reach and long-standing ties to top venture managers. Ross Morrison, who leads primary investments, added that now is a unique time to bet on Europe’s digital transformation.
Adams Street’s new €270 million fund shows it’s ready to help shape Europe’s tech and healthcare future. With its hands-on model, trusted partners, and focus on long-term value, the firm is well-positioned to lead in the next chapter of global venture capital.
