Google is leveling up its AI-powered search with a major expansion of Google AI Mode, removing access barriers and introducing features designed to make everyday searches more intuitive and useful. Initially rolled out in March as an experimental feature within Google Labs, AI Mode is now open to all U.S. users aged 18 and up — no more waitlist required.

This move marks Google’s latest step in its ongoing rivalry with AI-first platforms like Perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search, aiming to transform traditional search into a more personalized, conversational experience.

Until now, AI Mode was limited to Labs testers. But Google is broadening its reach, with plans to introduce an AI Mode tab directly in Search for a small percentage of U.S. users. That means some people will start seeing the option right on the homepage — no experimental access needed.

Alongside this expansion comes a wave of new features. Most notably, users can now pick up where they left off. Whether you’re mid-planning a vacation or researching a new project, Google now allows you to revisit previous AI Mode interactions via a new panel on the left side of your desktop screen. From there, you can review earlier answers and continue the conversation without starting over.

Beyond smarter continuity, Google AI Mode now helps users dive deeper into local and shopping-related queries. Looking for a new restaurant or planning a trip? Google’s AI will now surface visual cards for places and products, giving you rich, tappable results. You’ll see everything from business hours and real-time popularity to shipping times and product images — all embedded directly within your conversation.

For instance, if you ask about “vintage furniture shops with midcentury pieces,” AI Mode doesn’t just return links. It highlights nearby stores, shows how busy they are, and even provides quick access to call or get directions.

Product searches are equally intelligent. A request like “best foldable camping chair under $100 that fits in a backpack” returns curated product suggestions — complete with pricing, stock updates, visuals, and links to online or local retailers.

These additions underscore Google’s broader vision: turning search into an ongoing, helpful conversation rather than a one-time query. As AI competition heats up, this evolution of Google AI Mode places it firmly in the race to dominate the next era of internet discovery.
